Latest news on iPhone USB-C port type

Could Apple be forced to put a USB-C port on its iPhones, iPads, and AirPods? Members of the European Parliament voted forcefully in support of rules that could force Apple to switch to USB Type-C in all its devices.

Officially called a directive, the proposal would require all consumer electronics manufacturers that sell devices in Europe to make sure that all their new devices - be it phones, tablets, laptops, digital cameras, headphones, video game consoles, and even portable speakers, to carry a USB Type-C port.

No exception would be given to manufacturers unless devices are too small to offer a USB-C port. For example, sports equipment like smart watches, health trackers, etc. could be too tiny for a Type-C port.

This isn't a jolt for Android, for most new Android phones have a USB Type-C port. Instead, it might become a problem for Apple, a company that has religiously stuck to its own Lightning connector.

Massive support for Type-C

European Parliament's Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee on Wednesday voted in favors of the legislation - with 43 votes in favour and only two against. In a press release.

Members of the European Parliament said that this legislation could help reduce electronic waste, improve product sustainability, and make usage of different devices easier.

In 2018, when the idea was first floated, Apple warned that a common charging port would hurt innovation and create electronic waste for users who would be required to switch to new cables. For this directive to come into effect, the European Parliament must approve the draft legislation next month. Then, individual EU states will be consulted about the final directive on a universal charging port.
